Gazebo before disaster
Since 1967 there has been a gazebo at the entrance to Pembroke Meadows, Pembroke Shores and Pembroke Townhomes at the intersection of Pembroke and Independence Boulevards.
Several gazebos have stood here, the current model, modeled on the very first structure, was erected in 2010.

On Sunday, January 13th, 2019, about 3:00 pm, a black Chevy Silverado pickup heading south on Independence made a left turn toward Pembroke Blvd. but instead ran onto the median, flattened a warning sign and smashed through half of the gazebo.  The truck continued across the median and exited going the wrong way on the left side of Pembroke Blvd.  Witnesses followed the truck to the end of the road and eventually the truck stopped in the Food Lion parking lot.  Virginia Beach Police and Fire Department responded to a 911 call.

Police did not disclose if any citation was issued to the truck driver.  A Crash Information Exchange Sheet was provided to a PMCL representative listing Christopher Allen Paprock as the vehicle driver.
