CIVIC LEAGUE NEWSLETTER

|
|
EDITOR'S CORNER
Summer is over and the leaves will soon be filling our yards and streets.
Please keep your street gutters free of leaves, as these will eventually
work their way to the waterways through the storm drains.
Clera and I have been doing the Newsletter since May of 97.
We both feel that a new editor might add a fresh perspective to reporting
civic events and neighborhood news. We have enjoyed our work on the
newsletter, but feel it is time now to pass the baton to an new runner.
If you or anyone you know would like to take the reins we will provide
you with any assistance you might need including a CD of past newsletters.
Just call us at 473-8258 or talk to us at the next civic league meeting. |

NEXT CIVIC LEAGUE MEETING
WILL BE AT 7:00 ON THURSDAY, Sept 16 IN THE SCHOOL CAFETERIA.

Neighborhood Reminder
Please do not post signs on the gazebo.
This is city property and it is illegal to
post any sign on city property without proper permits. Usually a
sign posted on your own stake is ignored but let’s try to keep our gazebo
free of litter as it is a trademark for our neighborhood.

OUR CORRESPONDING SECRETARY, Pat Cook, reminds us that she will
be most happy to mail cards of condolence/ get well wishes from the Civic
League to residents who have lost a loved one or who are sick. If you know
of a neighbor who has suffered a loss, or one who is ill, please call Pat
at 499-6204. |

Annual Halloween Parade
Fall is on it's way. The kids are back in school. Halloween is just
around the corner. Mark your calendars for SATURDAY, OCTOBER 30TH.
This will be the 14th year the Civic League has sponsored the Annual
Halloween Parade. For those new to the area--all ages are invited
to join in the parade and march through the neighborhood following the
band to the park. A party at the park follows the parade. Fun for
all. If you don't want to march please join us along the route
and cheer on the little ghosts and goblins. October’s newsletter
will give you the parade route and additional information.
As always we need cookies, apple juice or apple cider donations and VOLUNTEERS
to help out at the park. If you choose to make a cash donation,
please contact Belinda Nash at 490-2504 or Gerry
Richter at 497-5243 |

PUT YOUR MIND IN THE GUTTER A MOMENT
While we are still cutting grass now, leaves will soon be falling.
Grass clipping and leaves that are blown or allowed to remain in your gutter
END
UP IN OUR LAKES. Anything and everything that goes down the storm
drains go directly into our lake system. It not only pollutes the
lakes but becomes unsightly and affects everything living in the lakes.
Clean gutters certainly improve the appearance of your home so PLEASE
keep your mind on your gutter. |

SOCIAL GATHERING
Anybody interested in forming a little knitters/crocheters social group?
We'd get together for light refreshments and gabbing while each person
works on her own project -- or we could do a group project if the group
wants to. Maybe share patterns or ideas -- maybe have a small door
prize -- Whatever. Let's get it started and see where
it goes.
Loretta 497-2130.

CAN YOU TUNA CAN?
Sorry - that was really bad! The director of Samaritan House needs
cans of tuna for the residents (homeless.) If you can help
out, bring a can of tuna to the next Civic League meeting.
Tomato sauce (cans only --no jars, please) is also always in demand.
Remember, "There, but for the grace of God, go I."
Bless us all. And thanks.--Loretta Watkins |

16™ ANNUAL CLEAN THE BAY DAY
On behalf of The Chesapeake Bay Foundation, our community is again commended
for volunteering for Clean the Bay Day. We could not have made this
step toward our goal of "Saving the Bay" without your help. This year more
than 3,560 volunteers helped to retrieve 157,350 pounds of debris along
180 miles of waterways throughout the Hampton Roads area.
Our own efforts included 71 neighborhood volunteers who picked up approximately
6,000 pounds of trash from our local lakes and waterways. Our efforts
included the waterways of the Lynnhaven River, Old Donation Creek and Cove,
Thurston Creek, Lake Pembroke and Lake Meadows. The following volunteers
participated and their efforts are much appreciated:
Area Coordinators: Bob Lukeman, Frank Mulcahy, Jim Hall,
Jim Willenbrink Jr., Fred Willis and Debbie Evelyn.
Participants: Roy Aubrey, The Ashe family, Jim &
Jeannette Brown, Ed Campbell, Valerie Davis, Jimmy Eddings, The Jim Hall
family, Ed Hughes & Son, John Jeanguenat, The Lukeman family, The Mike
Moore family, The Mulcahy family, The Jim Price family, Jeff & Yanna
Sias, L. St.Claire & Son, Sid Sward, Dawn Thames, Doc Webbner, Three
Willenbrink families, six visitors, and fifteen volunteers from the
Old
Donation Farms Homeowner’s Association.
The participants from the Old Donation Farms Homeowner’s Association
deserve special commendation for their exceptionally diligent and arduous
efforts. Cordinated by Mrs. Bevvie Evelyn, their group picked
up approximately 4,000 lbs of debris and trash comprising many huge pieces
of lumber, some so large that they had to be towed and dragged up
their community boat ramp to the collection site.
Well done to all participants!
Jim Willenbrink Sr.
Zone Captain

In Memory of Nellie Pafford
Nellie Pafford, longtime resident of the Meadows and a familiar
face at our Bayside Library, died July 26th. Many of our children
and grandchildren have been served by Nellie over the past 21 years.
She has brought books back and forth from the library to many shut in or
ill residents. Funds are being collected towards a bench in her
Memory to be placed at Ferry Plantation House in the formal garden area.
If you would like to make a donation towards this memorial you may
drop off a check payable to FOFPH-NelliePafford Memorial or mail it to
FOFPH, 4336 Cheswick Lane, Va Beach. |
