Pembroke Meadows Civic League
General Membership Meeting and Potluck Dinner
Thursday, March 21, 2013
The meeting was well-attended. We had a total attendance of 28!
Our President, Donna Price, called the meeting to order and announced
that some members had volunteered for Board offices: for First Vice
President, Kate Nixon; for Second Vice President, Susan Frohwitter, for
Corresponding Secretary, Beverly Wilson. Joanne Wilson will serve
as back-up for Beverly.
Donna asked for volunteers for median clean-up, and also asked that
those who haven’t completed the questionnaire for Officer Eichas at the
3rd Precinct please do so tonight.
(The Secretary’s notes for the first part of the meeting are somewhat
sketchy, since she was getting people to sign-in to the meeting and sign-up
for median duty.)
Donna said that we still need a Welcoming Committee chairperson and
someone for Buildings and Grounds. If you’d like to volunteer, please
see Donna.
We had one person who never attended a meeting before, and she was given
a mug.
Carol Moore, our Treasurer, said that we need to vote on the 2013 budget
tonight. There was an inquiry regarding an insurance item in the
budget. Mike Moore said that the schools had begun requiring us to
have insurance to use their building. We are pretty sure the pool
paid it last year. One item in the budget is different from that
printed in the newsletter. In February the pool had not given us
a request for funds. We decided to pay for the pool cover (which
the pool had paid for already). Those funds will give them enough
money to get started on any projects they have planned. There was
a motion to accept the budget with this one change. It was seconded.
The motion passed with no dissensions.
Following adoption of the budget, Ms. Tanya Wilson, Recycling Administrative
Technician for the City of Virginia Beach Waste Management Division of
Public Works gave us a very informative and interesting presentation on
what we can and cannot recycle.
We then resumed our meeting.
Carol finished giving the Treasurer’s Report. We have $4,417.72
in the Civic League checking account, $13,813.62 in the Business Money
Market account for a grand total of $18,231.34.
So far this year we have taken in $1,730.00 in dues. Also, many
times people send along a donation and that total has been $480.
There was some discussion about the cell tower contract. We lease
the land to the cell company. Until they no longer need the tower,
the lease will continue to be renewed. Clif Furedy said it appears
that they have doubled the antennas on the tower, so they have made an
investment to add capabilities. We feel reasonably confident that
the tower is going to stay there at least 3-4 years.
Mike Moore said he has flower cards, being sold in support of the pool.
For a card costing $30, you can get a bouquet of flowers from Norfolk Florist
every month for a year.
We have 173 members of the Civic League, with a few more having been
added in March. We usually average around 200, so we need to encourage
more people to join.
Mike and Carol Moore are editing the newsletter.
There was some discussion of the Spring Fling. It isn’t just for
the pool, but for the surrounding area, too.
Jeanette Willenbrink gave us a report from the Garden Club. The
city has planted 5 good-sized trees in the Park. This was a very
pleasant surprise. Jeanette also noted that the plaque for the memorial
tree has been broken. She will check with the City about replacing
that. Donna said if the City won’t replace it, the Civic League will.
The Garden Club is very small and they are always looking for new members.
Jeanette also talked about the Ladies Lunch group that meets once a
month. This month it will be on Wednesday, March 27 at noon at Max
and Erma’s. If you’d like to attend please let Jeanette or Loretta
Watkins know.
Jeff Brown reported that we are all set for Clean the Bay Day which
will be Saturday, June 1.
Old Business:
Donna noted that there had been a lot of complaints about parking and
code enforcement. She is trying to provide information in the newsletter
about do’s and don’ts’s.
New Business:
The Board would like to know if there is interest in holding a Civic
League yard sale. The Board would pay for the advertising.
Each participant would set up on their own driveway. The dates being
considered are the weekend prior to Memorial Day or toward the beginning
of June. Each participant would be given a map showing the location
of all other participants. There seemed to be a decided interest
in proceeding. Cheryl Douglas will be the coordinator. She
will pick a date and put it in the newsletter.
Swearing in of new officers: Jim Price, as past President, swore
in all the new officers, and Clif Furedy took their picture.
The meeting was adjourned at 8 p.m.
Respectfully Submitted,
Barbara Amos
