Pembroke Meadows Garden Club was organized on September 11, 1969 with
Joye Fralix as the first president. Since that time the club
has been a supporting member of the Council of Garden Clubs of Virginia
Beach and for many years was a member of the Tidewater District V.F.G.C.,
Inc., the Virginia Federation of Garden Clubs, Inc., and the National Council
of State Garden Clubs, Inc.
The club’s many projects have included monthly judging and exhibits;
various HANDS (beautification) projects and later ABC projects; sponsorship
of a junior garden club from 1976 through 1987, holiday decorating contests;
a yard of the month program; Christmas home placement shows; decorating
the neighborhood entranceway annually with fresh greens for Christmas;
garden therapy; and maintenance of many past beautification projects.
A major focus of the club has been working on and overseeing the upkeep
of the two-block-long entrance boulevard into their community. In
addition the club has periodically updated or replaced all of the landscaping
at the neighborhood recreation center facility. The garden club also
worked to assist the civic league and city in the design and planting of
the flower bed around the new flagpole.
The members currently continue to have their monthly meetings and schedule
educational field trips occasionally. |
