HRCMOAA Community Affairs: Honoring our Veterans, Supporting Current Activities and Fostering the Future

On Memorial Day and Veterans Day the chapter traditionally participates in ceremonies and activities honoring those who have served by presenting wreaths, participating in a parade and attending a luncheon. We support these functions in both Virginia Beach and the City of Chesapeake.

At local commissioning ceremonies, the Chapter presents gold bars, congratulatory letters signed by HRCMOAA’s President, a book titled “Courage In Combat” by Richard J. Rinaldo, LTC, USA (Ret) with each book personally inscribed by the President of the Chapter to those being commissioned from the AROTC units from Old Dominion University and Norfolk State University and the combined Hampton Roads NROTC unit of Old Dominion University, Norfolk State, Hampton University and Regent University.

A MOAA Leadership Award “For Having Demonstrated Exceptional Potential for Military Leadership” is presented to a cadet, midshipman, and officer candidate from each of the three four college ROTC programs. These awards also include ten-high school NJROTC units including Booker T. Washington, Lake Taylor, Norview, Maury, and Granby of Norfolk and Princess Anne, Salem, First Colonial, Cox, Landstown, and Green Run of Virginia Beach.

Princess Anne High School hosts the NJROTC Cavalier Drill Meet with participation from high schools from Delaware, Maryland, West Virginia, and Virginia.   The competition consists of Individual and Unit drills with rifles and swords.  The Chapter has supported this Drill Meet by donating funds for the trophies and making the presentations.

The Chapter has coordinated the participation of all university programs and two of the high school programs in departure ceremonies for the Honor Flight trips to Washington, DC, which honors World War II, Korean War and Vietnam veterans.

We invite chapter members to participate in these events to help represent our chapter and ensure we can continue to support the community.  Contact Loren Heckelman, Andy Baan or Mike Barea to volunteer your participation.
