No fund was set up by St. Gregory’s
church at Towne Bank.
We are sorry that there has been some confusion
and miscommunication regarding a memorial fund being set up for Katherine
Nixon through St. Gregory’s.
We know that it was published on the church
Wake Service program and that we put it in our newsletter, but the information
was in error.
Instead, Kate’s family would like to ask
that if you would like to donate to a trust fund being set up for the girls,
you can do so by sending a check directly to the Nixon home, 708 Abbey
Arch. You may make the check out to Jason Nixon or any of the three
girls, Morgan, Madilyn or Mackenzie.
The family thanks you for your generosity
and if you have already sent a check to St. Gregory’s, please contact Carol
Moore, (757) 557-0328. She is helping Jason deal with this mistake
and already has several of the checks sent previously. She will be
attempting to contact those donors.
Thank you for your patience.

Obituary - published
June 4, 2019 in the Virginian-Pilot |
Katherine Anne Marie Lusich-Nixon,
42, of Virginia Beach, VA, was tragically taken from us on May 31, 2019.
The second of eight children, she was a
loving mother committed to her husband and children, and she worked as
the Compliance Manager of the Public Utility Facility for the City of Virginia
Beach. She attended Chico State College in California, graduating with
a degree in Civil Engineering. She was widely respected in her field, and
was a strong advocate for women pursuing careers in engineering.
Kate was a person who always put others
before herself. She was President of the Pembroke Meadows Civic League,
a dedicated and enthusiastic member of St Gregory The Great Catholic Church,
the announcer for the Pembroke Marlin swim team, and actively supported
the Little Sisters of the Poor, a Catholic organization that offers the
neediest elderly of every race and religion a home where they will be welcomed.
Katherine was predeceased by her father
Bob Lusich, grandmothers, Suzanne Dandy and Dorthy Lusich and her father-in-law,
Captain William Fred Nixon.
Left to cherish her memory are her husband
Jason;
children Morgan Katherine, Madilyn Alexis and MacKenize
Marie; her grandfather, James F. Dandy; her mother Julie Dandy, brothers
Paul, Matthew, Daniel and Philip; and sisters Suzanne, Nancy and Caroline,
as well as innumerable nieces, nephews, uncles, aunts, cousins and close
friends.
A Wake Service will be held at 7 PM on
Wednesday June 5, 2019, at St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church, 5345
Virginia Beach Blvd., Virginia Beach, VA 23462. A funeral Mass will be

The following is quoted
from the Virginian-Pilot article by Tamara Dietrich, June 1, 2019 |
Katherine A. Nixon worked for 10 years
as an engineer with the Department of Public Utilities in Virginia Beach,
but is remembered as much more than that.
“She was an amazing woman who cared about
everyone,” said friend Shelby O’Regan Acevedo of Virginia Beach. “She was
smart as a whip. She helped any way she could.
“She loved her husband unconditionally,
and always stood up for what was right. She was a ray of sunlight that
led so many in the right direction. She was selfless, smart and, most of
all, a loving mother.”
Nixon, 42, leaves behind a husband, Jason,
a realtor, and their three children.
An avid swimmer growing up, Nixon remained
active in swimming and in soccer.
“Her favorite time of year is right now,
because she loves doing swim team with her daughter,” Acevedo said. “She
was my son’s very first soccer coach, and she had a way with all the kids
— she helped him love the game at 4 years old.”
Nixon is one of four city engineers and
one of six public utilities employees killed in Friday’s mass shooting,
which claimed the lives of 11 employees and a contractor.
Darrell Wentworth posted on the site of
Saint Gregory the Great Catholic Church in Virginia Beach that he had been
praying with Jason Nixon just before the family was notified of her fate.
“Please pray for the repose of the soul
of Kate Nixon,” Wentworth wrote. |
